The Quayle Factor

quayle.jpg
Anyone remember how scary this guy played on the competence front?

Yesterday we heard Sarah Palin's first interview, and she sounded, to me, pretty terrible. But Quayle was widely seen as a disaster for Bush in his bid for the presidency, and was the subject of an infamous retort from Lloyd Bentsen at the Vice-Presidential debate, and in the end, what did it matter?

Some believe that Quayle's ongoing screw-ups throughout Bush's first term led to Bush being weaker in 1992.

I hope we don't get too bogged down in Sarah Palin, because no matter how buffeted she gets, I doubt she has the ability to lose this election for McCain.

She's lost her fire enough that maybe it's time to move on, no matter how scary she may be.

Home Spun Illusions, or the Magic Mirror?

illusion.jpgHere's an illusion for you. The older guy has started kindergarten a week ago, and he came home with this self-portrait yesterday.

So...does he like school? Or not? I asked him about it, a little stab of regret passing through me. I said, is this person happy or sad? Of course knowing the answer was sad. Not just sad, but BIG sad. Misery sad. Don't worry, only 13-17 more years and you're done.

But then he said, without missing a beat - happy! He's smiling! And I looked again.

Sure enough, there's the little guy, happy as a clam.

And with a freakin firestorm of flesh tone to boot! So now I have to wonder, who's the unhappy one? What did YOU see? Happy, or sad?
